A Message from the Board of Directors(Rev. Dr. Julian Wong – Board Chair)
Honor the Legacy, Explore the Future
In last year’s 2023 annual report, I mentioned an acronym “H.E.”, and it has three meanings.
1) “H.E.” stands for our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
SOBEM will continue to follow the mission entrusted to us by the Lord faithfully – Global Media Mission. We will always seek and trust in His power to share the gospel in various places and with different media.
2) The “H” in “H.E.” stands for Honor the Legacy.
By the grace of God, SOBEM has done many good things in the past 37 years and God has given us a solid foundation and a great tradition. SOBEM will continue to do what we did best in the past and will improve and renew along the way.
3) The “E: in “H.E.” stands for Explore the Future.
Entering in our 38th year, SOBEM will continue to develop new ways to share the gospel to different generations through different media. Though many things changed, the gospel remains unchanged. We trust in the Lord to experience breakthroughs and explore the future together.
For SOBEM, 2024 is a year to Rejoice, Reflect, Request and Renew in the Lord.
Rejoice
My time as a board member of SOBEM is just six short years. During this time, I have witnessed God’s faithfulness in SOBEM, for which I rejoice. When we faced financial challenges, God encouraged the board and staff not to fear, but to have faith in Him. According to His faithfulness and perfect timing, SOBEM has never lacked in His grace. I am thankful for the faithful supporters of SOBEM, who have stood by us unwaveringly. They truly follow the biblical teachings, being steadfast in season and out of season, standing alongside SOBEM to spread the gospel. I rejoice for the staff of SOBEM in various locations, who, no matter where they are or what positions they hold, offer their best to God, making it their mission to evangelize and care for others. I rejoice in the fact that through our productions, care hotline, and outreach events, we are able to encourage people to come to faith in the Lord and experience His love. Although we may not have met in person, God loves you, protects you, and walks with you in His eternal kingdom.
Reflect
2024 will also be a year for SOBEM to pause and reflect. Last year, our theme was “Face New Challenge of the Generation, Stand Firm at the Forefront of Evangelism”. We recognized that the next five years will be a period of renewal and transition for many Chinese churches and gospel organizations. In this era of transformation and rapid change, SOBEM is reflecting on how to uphold our global media mission in evangelism. We are reminded once again by God that the primary purpose of SOBEM is not media production. Our mission is global evangelism (Proclamation) and caring for people (People). We aim to fulfill the mission God has given us through diversified media production (Production) and partnerships with various churches and gospel organizations (Partnership). Our team is also actively reflecting on the role of artificial intelligence in media evangelism, exploring how it can effectively assist us in upholding our global media mission in the digital age.
Request
After the departure of the General Secretary in 2023, the board waited for over a year, praying and seeking guidance. The board members have a strong belief that God will raise up a leader according to His will and timing for His ministry. During the prayer, the Holy Spirit reminded the board members to wait patiently and to be vigilant in prayer through God’s Word, as for those who wait on the Lord will renew their strength. At the same time, Rev. Jones Lee was also led by the Holy Spirit to wait for God’s guidance in the direction of his future ministry. By the end of 2024, God heard our prayers and led Rev. Jones Lee, an experienced new generation pastor who is proficient in Mandarin, Cantonese, and English, able to communicate with different cultures, and who has a strong burden for media missions and a willingness to commit to serving in SOBEM. God is faithful; He says that everyone who seeks will find.
Renew
In 2024, without a general secretary, God moved me to help lead the team of SOBEM in a journey of renewal together while serving as a Senior Pastor in a church. With the team efforts, we completed the first phase of the portrait short films, summarizing some of the previous 26-minute testimony videos into portrait shorts to be posted on YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook. We also began the second phase; we will release the new 26-minute TV version alongside portrait introduction shorts on major social media platforms. We have also produced a new series titled “My Song, My Story,” consisting of 18 episodes that were aired on our YouTube channel. This series explores the daily lives, family, and workplace challenges faced by Cantonese young adults and young families through conversations and song sharing, understanding and dialoguing from a faith perspective.
Thank God for His guidance, I had the opportunity to visit SOBEM in Hong Kong and the United States, praying and discussing ministries of God’s kingdom with their board members and colleagues. We share the same conviction that SOBEM in various locations should have closer cooperation in the future to jointly Explore the future and work together for global media missions.
Honor the Legacy, Explore the Future. My prayer is, this is not only the theme of SOBEM this year, but also the theme for you and your families.

February
Panama
Ten years later, our crew returned to Panama in February to witness transformed lives. Some found hope after business failures, others rose successfully from adversity, and our past interviewees also experienced rebirth through faith after enduring hardships. In Christ, they now live abundant lives, showcasing the transformative power of the Gospel.
After the annual banquet in April, the crew embarked on a journey, taking five flights to reach the island of Santo in Vanuatu. Accompanied by healthcare workers and volunteers from New Zealand, we shared Christ’s love with the locals. The stark poverty of the island deeply impacted us who are accustomed to a life of comfort.

Frankfurt and Budapest
It was fall in Frankfurt and Budapest when the crew witnessed European Chinese churches, despite their limited resources, staying rooted in Christ and passing on the gospel. Their unwavering faith, like the Danube, nurtures the land, inspiring and moving us deeply.
A journey to the West Coast in November took us to Vancouver and Seattle. Our guests, having endured the loss of loved ones, were healed by God’s love; others shone as salt and light in their areas of expertise, diligently spreading the Gospel of the Kingdom. Their stories, like the winter sun, warmed hearts and illuminated every corner of life.

One minute inspiring animated story
Life really is like a classroom where we’re constantly learning, and it’s all about applying what we understand. It’s one thing to know the truth, but it’s the act of living it out that makes the difference. That’s where the real transformation happens— got it and do it, when we take what we’ve learned and use it to move forward on the journey of life.

Vancouver Committee Report
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but take heart, I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)
In fact, no suffering can surpass God’s love. We have peace in the Lord!
Even though the Russian-Ukrainian war and the Israeli-Pakistani conflict continue in 2024, the US presidential election, the fall of the Assad regime in Syria, the resignation of the Canadian Prime Minister, and natural and man-made disasters occur one after another in various places, God’s love always trumps all of them. Sobem's ministry begins with personal life stories that connects family affairs, national affairs, and even world affairs. They are indeed interlocking and closely related. The headquarters filming crew has visited Eastern Europe, Ukraine and Poland for on-site filming many times. Vancouver Sobem team also followed the pace: “Facing new challenges of the generation and staying at the forefront of the gospel” and continued our evangelism work in this city.
Ministry Events:
- April - “More Love at Home” Music Life Sharing Session, where two seasoned Christian musicians Ivy So and Andrew Ling shared their life stories. More than 400 people participated in the two gatherings, and eight people believed in the Lord. Also, more than 400 people attended our annual fund raising and vision sharing banquet. Everyone raised their phones and clicked to subscribe to support our online platform, which deeply moved our co-workers.
- July - Cho Lam Wong was very concerned about the conversion of young people from China to God and held two gatherings for professional youth and college students. The latter was Sobem’s first time to preach on the campus of Simon Fraser University. It was a rare opportunity.
- August - Phyllis Cheung's “Sharing Classic Oldies – Sobem Live” was held at Pacific Grace MB Church and attracted many people to attend.
- December - Following the success of the previous gathering, Cho Lam and his wife Leanne shared their love stories this time to encourage young people to have a correct attitude towards marriage.
Ministry and Life Care:
Contacts with different branches - Two administrative staff were invited to attend the annual dinner of US Sobem in September. Together with two headquarters staff and the former general secretary Rev Jim Tam, a group of five people visited the main office of US Sobem in San Francisco and experienced their work there. The spirit of global operation is also reflected in the good work of US Sobem there.
In terms of TV programs - a three-member crew visited Vancouver and Seattle again in November and a total of 8 stories were filmed which would be aired in 2025.
As for radio recording - this year there were more than 20 guests interviewed, including Hong Kong singers Gary Lau, Karen Kung, Kimman Wong, Bosco Poon, and the members of the Hong Kong Christian Music Ministry Association, etc. Very excited in the studio! Furthermore, starting from September this year, in addition to AM1470 broadcasting our program on Saturdays, we will also replay it on AM1320 CHMB every Thursday at 6:30 pm (Broadcast coverage covers inland BC). Each has its own audience, allowing our programs to be heard farther and wider.
In terms of life care - we continue to answer calls from all over the world every Tuesday and Saturday, with a total volunteer team of nine people. We are truly grateful that they faithfully listened to the callers’ requests. Sobem co-workers will also provide care and visits as needed as we are all one family in the Lord.
From the beginning of the year to the end of the year, the eyes of our Lord never left. Especially at the end of the year, in addition to being happy to see 1-min Shorts being widely accepted, we were also happy to see that the headquarters began to cooperate with different organizations on the online platform to shoot music specials and thankfully Vancouver Sobem also had its first collaboration with three young people in its Sobem Junior team and try to shoot short films of different themes to pass on the vision of Sobem and make the audience of Sobem continue to be younger.
We sincerely hope that the Lord who gives peace can help people gain peace through the ministry of Sobem. Amen!
New Zealand Committee Report
We faced personnel changes starting from April. God led some of our faithful co-workers to serve in new areas or focus on other ministries. We give our heartfelt thanks to God for them! We also thank them for their continued service in the Lord with us. We believe that God will continue to make them a blessing to many in different fields and glorify the Lord’s name!
God once again led the Canadian filming crew to come to New Zealand in April and May. They are not only taking new series of testimonies in NZ, but also followed the New Zealand short-term missions’ team and went to the Pacific Island, Vanuatu to record their service there. Praise the Lord! Once again, God show us that serving does not depend on the number of people, but on God!
Until June, God encouraged us to pay more attention in prayer. Therefore, we started to have prayer meeting on the last Tuesday night of each month. We pray and seek for God's guidance. In prayer, God gave us some ideas and thoughts, and we will try to implement them in 2025.
We look forward to having new co-workers joining us and spread the gospel with us through SOBEM NZ.
