A Message from the Board of Directors
(Rev. Dr. Julian Wong – Board Chair)

Thanks to our Lord Jesus for giving me an opportunity to serve with the support of all the Board members, I succeeded Director Albert Lee as the chair of the SOBEM Board starting Jan 2023. In 2023, Rev. Raymond Kwok accepted God’s calling to serve in another ministry and resigned from General Secretary. On behalf of the Board, I sincerely thank Pastor Raymond Kwok for his dedication and faithful service in SOBEM.

With the pandemic slowly fading out, 2023 is full of hope for everyone. As a matter of fact, SOBEM had many new plans even before the pandemic. However, like most churches, our plans have been changed or delayed due to the pandemic. Thank you for your prayers and encouragement, SOBEM did not slack off, we have started again. Our filming team, the most affected ministry by the pandemic, has fully restored its operations, and has been filming testimonies in Canada and around the world with full of blessings.

Vision Sharing and Fundraising

Fund Raising Event

36th Annual Thanksgiving / Vision Sharing Event 2023

The 36th Annual Thanksgiving / Vision Sharing Event was held on April 1 (Saturday) at 6 pm at the Casa Deluz Banquet Hall.

The theme was “Reconnect 重新連結”

We invited Xiao Jinzi (小金子) to be our guest speaker.

George Wang and Alison Cheung were the MC of that day.

A total of $130,000 was raised after deducting from necessary expenses of the Toronto and Vancouver banquets. There were 76 tables held in Toronto, and more than 780 brothers and sisters from different churches gathered together witnessing God’s abundant grace in SOBEM over the past 36 years. The atmosphere was very touching! The venue was filled with praises in the Lord, and all the glory be to our Father in Heaven!

Telethon 2023

November 18 and 19 (Saturday and Sunday)

An amount over $117,000 was raised. It is about 6.04% of the annual budget.

SOBEM would like to express our gratitude to the supporters for their love and dedication, and with heartfelt thanks to the volunteers who participated in the evening’s telethon with actions and dedication to serve the Lord. This is all because of the grace of God.

Outlook in LifeCare Ministry

  • New Webpage

There will be a new webpage designated to LifeCare Ministry in 2024. The contents will include articles of “Amazing Love”; prayer webpage and global hotline service etc. It is expected that more people could be reached to care with advanced searching engines.

  • The 12th LifeCare Training Course

The 12th LifeCare training course will be held in September 2024 to train a group of volunteers who are interested in caring for people over the phone and through online, and to support the network for the global LifeCare ministry. It is also geared to integrate Christian faith and care, and learn how to care for those suffering from emotional distress; help them develop a holistic life with positive and enterprising attitude. The most important of all is to lead the unbelievers to Christ.

Highlights of the 2023 Production Trips

February

New Zealand

Rain poured in Auckland, New Zealand in late February.
Our team witnessed the repair and reconstructions of the aftermath.
Just like our guests with a lost wife, lost jobs, or other difficulties in life,
their lives was rebuilt and renewed with Jesus Christ.

It’s still cold in early summer,
While we visited Vancouver and Seattle.
We interviewed youths of second, third, even forth generations,
as well as Chinese who lived for over half a century.
Their lives blossom like Vancouver’s spring because of Jesus Christ.

September

Poland & Ukraine

The Russia-Ukraine war persisted more than a year.
Our team visited Ukraine’s neighbour, Poland, and even went into Ukraine,
to see how the Chinese and local churches become a light in the darkness,
leading the despaired Ukrainians to find peace in Christ.

It’s been twenty years since our team set foot in this multi-cultural country.
We enjoyed good fellowship with guests and testified the work God has done on them.

USA Branch Report

USA Board staff

Under God’s gracious guidance, SOBEM USA commemorated its 25th anniversary this year—a significant milestone for which we praise God. This year’s Vision-sharing and Thanksgiving Dinner was held on September 24th, with the attendance of over 460 guests from various churches and supporters. Our keynote speaker Dr. Szeto, a prominent Christian business leader from Hong Kong, shared his impactful testimony from his business experiences, and provided encouragement and challenges for us to seek a greater vision for the next 25 years.

Reflecting on 2023, SOBEM co-workers have diligently expanded media work in various aspects. Here are some of our updates:

  1. Filming and Production – for 2023, SOBEM USA has created over 50 episodes, predominantly comprising short videos of between 10 to 20 minutes. These stories serve to uplift the extensive Chinese community in North America, providing encouragement in their daily lives. Furthermore, they are instrumental in spreading the gospel locally and in the global mission field.
  2. Media Platforms - While continuing our presence on seven TV and radio stations, SOBEM USA has significantly expanded its online presence in recent years.
    1. SOBEM USA YouTube (@sobem-usa) channel's subscribers have grown from 2,000 to about 10,000, with episode hits ranging from hundreds to tens of thousands. In conjunction with SOBEM platforms in Canada (@SOBEM_Canada) and Hong Kong (@sobemhk), the testimonies of Showers of Blessing have reached a global audience, touching the lives of countless individuals around the world.
    2. Facebook, TikTok, Spotify (Podcast), and other platforms further amplify these stories to users worldwide.
    3. ASIAM- Our English platform witnessed continue growth, surpassing 600 followers on Instagram. Our diverse community, which revolves around the intersection of Asian American identity and Christian faith, has blossomed into a vibrant space to celebrating the unique ways in which God has created us.  This year, we have produced 70 short videos and 6 long-form videos which enriched our discussions, offering insights that mirror the diverse experiences within the As I Am community
  1. Community Outreach - This June, we conducted a community gospel gathering with several groups from various churches and music groups from across the Bay Area.   There were lively musical performances, and offering Hong Kong-style snacks.
  2. Partnerships - We also advocated collaboration with various churches and organizations, utilizing our audio-visual production resources to enhance and support churches video projects.  This year, we have worked with “Christian Witness Theological Seminary”, “Go and Love Foundation”, and several other churches and evangelical events for production collaboration.
  3. Resources and Finances - Our dedicated staff team of five co-workers, along with several contract co-workers and a team of volunteers, has been the driving force behind the ministry's development. With a total expenditure of $710,000 USD this year and an income of $680,000 USD, our deficit is about $30,000 USD this year. We thank God for His gracious provision all these years, and trust in God's leading us into future years by faith.

Vancouver Committee
Report

“Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good. His love endures forever.” (Psalms 136:1)

Those who have survived the pandemic of the century and experienced COVID-19 safely do not know what else to say except gratitude! At the beginning of the New Year 2023, everything was renewed. The market was rejuvenated, and people flew again. People regained their confidence of the past, shook hands, and even hugged each other. His love does endure forever! The ministry of Vancouver SOBEM also responded to the theme of “Reconnect” at the head office and started physical gatherings, no longer just online:

Outcome of events

  • In January, over 600 people attended the two sessions of Wong Cho Lam’s “Ever-changing Life” Mandarin evangelistic meetings, and 70 people believed in the Lord.  Seeing believers picked up the cross and held it high, was a really touching scene.
  • In April, over 300 people attended the two sessions of Channels’ “Reconnect” Cantonese evangelistic meetings, and 5 people believed in the Lord.  As for our Annual Thanksgiving and Fund Raising Dinner, we had almost 400 people attended the event. People reunited after a long separation and chatted non-stop. It was another touching scene.
  • In June, Dr. Matthew Kwok shared his testimony during the “SOBEM Live - Real People, Real Story” event at Peace Gospel Church, the event also attracted many people to attend.

Ministry and LifeCare

  • In May, HQ's TV production team visited Vancouver and Seattle to film a total of eight testimonial stories, scheduled to be broadcast from January to April 2024.
  • In October, two ministry administrative colleagues attended General Secretary Pastor Raymond Kwok's reverend ordination ceremony in Toronto and participated in CCCOWE's “Reimaging Future Church” meeting. They also held meetings with various departments at the head office to discuss the SOBEM ministry.
  • For radio recording, guests were being interviewed every month at the studio of Fairchild Radio. The interviewed guests this year included Phyllis Man, Ivy So, Andrew Ling and many others.
  • For LifeCare, experienced volunteers continue to answer calls from transferred lines all over the world every Tuesday and Saturday. The original volunteer team of seven has now increased to nine people.  We really appreciate their faithfulness in caring and listening to the callers.
  • As for the needs of local churches, our office continues to distribute SOBEM's custom designed caring cards, New Year banners, and TV stories USB to our supporting churches through VCEMF. We also participate in meetings held in churches, setting up booth and introduce our ministry!

We have seen the enduring love of our Lord throughout the whole year. Especially at the end of the year, we have seen the launching of YouTube Shorts initiated by Vancouver SOBEM. We have seen these one-minute videos being widely circulated and recommended. We are truly grateful to our Lord for keeping us in touch with the pulse of this versatile social media platform, so that we're not only just viewers of the Net but also net catchers, reaching people who have yet to believe in the Lord, and help them hear the gospel.  Amen!

Australia Committee Report

It has been a relatively quiet year, even though the pandemic is receding. For many years, a faithful brother has been helping us design the SOBEM banners for the Australian TVB Monthly; but due to his health, the banners are now designed by another sister and she has taken over the responsibility smoothly.

Some of our radio gospel listeners still request DVDs of our broadcasts, so we continue to distribute the last small amount of these old but still valuable resources.

New Zealand Committee Report

Greetings from NZ!

SOBEM NZ continues to seek God’s direction and “be still” to pray for how we can serve Him next after the impact of Covid pandemic.

However, we did not stand still. Between Feb and Mar 2023, the filming crew from HQ came and shot a few testimonies of local Christians here. It is now also confirmed that the filming crew will be returning in 2024 for more episodes.

A few of the committee members have resigned their roles in Sobem NZ effective 1 April 2024. we would like to thank them for their commitment over the past years and pray that God’s blessings and guidance be with them whereever they serve. Meanwhile, we keep our sigths on God and look forward to seeing new members to be part of our SOBEM family.

We thank everyone of you for your support in 2023 and please keep us, especially our needs and challenges in your prayers and may God’s showers of blessings be with us all in the years to come.
